WHAT IS IT?
A medical laboratory technician (MLT) performs routine tests in all areas of the clinical laboratory — searches for basic clues to the absence, presence, extent, and causes of diseases. This skilled individual is responsible for performing laboratory tests efficiently and accurately for high-quality patient care.
PREPARE TO ENTER THE WORKFORCE
The Medical Laboratory Technology training program prepares students for employment in clinical laboratories, industry, and biotechnology as a Medical Laboratory Technician, Laboratory Assistant and/or Research Technician/Associate. Curriculum prepares individuals to perform clinical laboratory tests and examinations in chemistry and urinalysis, hematology, microbiology, immunology and immunohematology.
Graduates may be eligible to take examinations of the Board of Registry of Medical Technologists of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or the American Association of Bioanalysts to obtain a California License through Laboratory Field Services Personnel Licensing of the California Department of Public Health.
Employment opportunities for both licensed and unlicensed MLT graduates include clinical laboratories in hospitals, physician’s offices, industry laboratories and research facilities.
